Rolling Bench Assembly Instructions

These instructions are for use with Bartlett Bench & Wire’s rolling leg system.  If you have another leg design, do not use these instructions.

Tools Required: Laser level (highly recommended) or 24” level, Air compressor and hose (to operate clip guns), 7/16” wrenches, Phillips bit and screw gun or drill (for Tek screws).

Components: The entire rolling base consists of:

1.      Two round legs that attach to a round crosspiece with two 4-bolt clamps.

2.      Two 1.66” OD rollers (3 may be used for benches over 72” wide.)

3.      “U” shaped wire pieces for anti-tip and roller alignment.

4.      Optional – Horizontal leg braces for above ground legs that are not set in concrete.

Leg installation- Laying out the proper location for the legs is critical to a smooth installation.  All legs are 72” apart (lengthwise) unless otherwise noted.  Bartlett Bench is not responsible for the design layout.  Before starting, measure your area and check your bench sizes to make sure everything will fit as planned.

In Ground Installations

  1. There are two ways to concrete the legs in the ground: (a) concrete the legs individually and then connect the crosspiece; or (b) connect the two legs together with the crosspiece and concrete them into the ground at the same time.  The second method of connecting the legs to the crosspiece first is less time consuming and helps ensure a square and level installation.  To attach the legs to the crosspiece use the 4-bolt clamps and tighten with all the tubes extending flush to the edge of the clamp.  The two legs should be parallel.  Use all 4 bolts and tighten securely.  Whichever method you use, proper location of the legs is critical.

  2. To locate the legs lengthwise, first mark the position of your bench on the ground.  All legs are 6 feet apart unless otherwise noted on your order.  Most benches have 1-3’ of overhang from the end of the last leg to the end of the bench.  The number of legs you have minus 1 is the number of 6’ spans for your bench.  The over hang equals:  ½ x (bench length – # of spans x 6’).  To locate the cross position of your legs, start by marking the widths of your benches on the ground with them in the centered position of where you want them.  They generally should be against each other, but if you have some extra width of the bay or house, you’ll have to decide where you want to leave the extra aisle width.  The legs will then center under these centered bench positions.  The center of the legs is at the center of the crosspiece.  Use a laser level if possible to set the legs.  The laser beam will give both vertical and horizontal guidance.

  3. Once the legs are set, lay the rollers on the cross pieces and push the swaged ends tightly into the non-swaged end of another tube.  If you have different length benches, check the packing slip to be sure you are using the right length tubes for the bench.  Adjust the rollers if necessary to make sure the swage does not land over a cross support tube.  Install a Tek screw at the swaged joint to keep one roller from turning inside the other.

  4. Anti-tip devices are included to place at every other leg, or 12 ft apart.  Place a Channel over every other crosspiece and use the “Specification” sheet to determine the location of the anti-tip device on the Channel.  Clip the “U” shaped devices to the Channel with it going around the cross tube.

  5. Using your invoice or packing slip to determine your Channel spacing, lay Channels out on the rollers starting at the end of the intended bench end and moving down the bench.  Remember that the rollers are likely to be 12” longer than the bench.  If you are installing heat or irrigation tubing, now is the time to insert them.  Hoses and tubes may be placed in the top or bottom mesh of the Channels.  It may be easier to bunch Channels up together to insert the heat water tubing, especially if you use a dowel or stiff rod to help feed the tubing.

  6. Clip the tops together per instructions on the Channel Top Assembly sheets.

 Above ground Installations:

Follow above instructions except the horizontal leg braces are clamped to the legs lengthwise to support the leg sets.  The braces can be set at any level, but 6” – 10” above the ground is recommended.
