Fixed Leg Assembly Instructions for Channel Tops

The assembly sequence will depend on the bench lengths for your job.  If your total bench length is about 10’ or less, follow the short bench instructions.  For longer benches use only the long bench instructions.  The leg spacing is 6 ft. apart with no more than 1.5 ft. of overhang at each end of the bench.

Short benches

  1. Before continuing, check your packing slips to ensure all the parts are located.

  2. Start by assembling your Channel Tops per the Channel Top instruction sheets.

  3. For benches up to 72” wide that have two support tubes, slide the tubes in the top mesh of the Channel about 1/5th ( 20% ) of the distance in from the outside edge.  For benches over 72” wide that have three support tubes, slide one in the center of the bench width and the outside ones about 1/8th of the distance in from the outside edge.  If there is a special need to place, the support tube in the bottom mesh of the Channel a special tool is available to slightly bend the wire of that mesh to allow the tube to fit.  Call us for details.  The tubes slide easily up to about 6-8 ft into a Channel Top.  If you have difficulty with the rest, try rotating the tube as you push it

  4. Place the bench top upside down to install the legs.  If your benches are not over 7 feet long, place the legs just inside of the end Channels.  For longer benches place the legs just outside of the second Channel in from each end.  Use a split “T” clamp to attach the leg to the support tube.  Using a framing square to make sure the leg is at a right angle to the top; attach the diagonal brace to the top by pushing the notch in one end over a wire in the Channel.  The mesh used should be about 10 meshes from the leg.  When the brace swings up against the side of the leg it should be locked in at the notch end.  If necessary, move it one direction or the other 1 mesh.  Attach the Tek screw using an electric drill and Phillips bit.

  5. Install plastic corners and end pieces according to instructions.

Long Benches

Read these instructions completely before proceeding.  There is more than one way to proceed, depending on the bench length, whether or not you’re installing heat or irrigation tube, and what type of legs or bases you’re using.  Be sure you have studied the Channel Top Assembly instructions and Clip Gun Use instructions.

  1. A jig to hold the support tubes will be most helpful in assembling long benches.  The support tube slides over a rod that is held horizontally by the jig.  The rod should slide at least 12” into the support tube to avoid kinking the tube.  They are available to rent or purchase from Bartlett Bench, or make up your own.  Any system that holds the support tubes from one end, and at the proper spacing, is useable.  The inside diameter of the support tubes is about 1.125”.

  2. Start sliding Channels onto the tubes, spacing them approximately to your bench specs.  It’s possible to slide up to 4 or 5 Channels at once onto the support tubes.  The standard spacing is 18” center to center; however, yours may be different.  Check your paperwork to be sure.

  3. If you will be installing hot water heat and/or irrigation tubes you will want to do it before attaching the top.  If you are using Bartlett Bench legs, install them as shown in #4 above.  The legs are spaced 6 feet apart.  If your bench length does not divide evenly into 6 feet, divide the difference by 2 and leave that much overhang at each end.

  4. Sleeves are supplied to hold the lengths of support tubes together.  Slide one-half of the sleeve into one support tube and install a Tek screw to hold the sleeve in place.  Now slide the other support tube into the other half of the sleeve and install another Tek screw.  These are a tight fit and if the end of the support tube is bent, you may need to bend it back out to insert the sleeve.

  5. Finish clipping the top according to the Channel Top Assembly instructions.
